Grace Pacific has stepped in as the confirmed buyer of HC&D's Maui quarry and says workers will be offered the chance to stay on the job once the deal closes. The move quickly cools earlier fears that the shutdown of the pit would cut dozens of positions and squeeze the island’s supply of locally sourced aggregate.
Grace Pacific Says Jobs Can Stay Put
The company confirmed it is offering the quarry’s current employees the option to remain at the site after the sale is finalized, according to Pacific Business News. The outlet reports that Grace Pacific, which operates quarries and asphalt plants across Hawaii, moved in after HC&D’s closure announcement sparked concerns over construction supply and local jobs.
HC&D’s Deep Roots On Maui
Honolulu Construction & Draying Co., better known as HC&D, has run quarry and ready-mix operations on Maui for decades, with its Camp 10 site in Puunene serving as the island’s central aggregate plant, according to HC&D. The company lists Camp 10 Quarry Rd in Puunene as its Maui facility and says it supplies aggregate and ready-mix concrete to local contractors.
June Closure Notice Put Jobs On The Line
On June 25, HC&D announced plans to close its Maui quarry this summer, a move that Pacific Business News reported could result in dozens of layoffs. The timing left contractors and crews scrambling for alternative sources of local stone while the island’s construction pipeline waited to see who, if anyone, would take over the pit.
Why This Pit Is A Big Deal
Quarries provide the basalt, sand and crushed rock that keep roads paved and concrete pouring across the islands. Losing a pit on Maui would likely have meant higher costs and longer lead times for projects. Grace Pacific’s company materials describe how its Makakilo Quarry and other operations help supply a steady stream of aggregate for local work, and state permitting documents show Camp 10 has long been the spot for asphalt and aggregate operations on Maui.
Next Steps For Camp 10
For now, HC&D’s website still lists Camp 10 as its Maui address, and county permitting and any staffing transition plans remain to be finalized, according to the company site. This story will be updated as either company, regulators or local officials release more details on the sale’s timing, how staffing will shift and what any permitting changes might look like.
