
A Friday ride on Harlem River Drive ended in tragedy for a 26-year-old motorcyclist in Washington Heights, after his bike slammed into a guard rail and he died at the scene, police said.
City authorities identified the rider as Ty Rodriguez, 26. Police said he was riding a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja southbound on Harlem River Drive when he failed to navigate the roadway and struck a metal guard rail, suffering severe head trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS, according to PIX11.
Crashes on city arterials
Arterial routes like Harlem River Drive have seen multiple serious collisions this year, and local crash trackers say Manhattan expressways remain especially dangerous for motorcyclists. The tracker CrashCount, which compiles NYPD crash reports, has logged a string of fatal and serious collisions on Manhattan arteries, according to CrashCount.
Investigation underway
The NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the crash and working to determine what caused Rodriguez to lose control, police said. No arrests have been reported, and investigators are continuing to examine the scene and talk with witnesses, according to PIX11.
