A deadly burst of gunfire over the July Fourth holiday left one man dead in West Philadelphia and four others wounded in separate shootings across the city, police said. The violence stretched from North Philadelphia to Oxford Circle and back to West Philly, keeping investigators busy as residents swept up from their holiday cookouts and fireworks.
Four Shot in Separate Independence Day Incidents
On the night of July 4, police said, three separate shootings sent four men to hospitals in different corners of the city. Around 10:27 p.m., officers in the 19th Police District found a 33-year-old man lying in the roadway with two gunshot wounds and an unloaded firearm underneath him. A man spotted running along the same street was stopped and taken in for questioning. Around the same time, a 51-year-old man walked into a hospital after being shot in the foot at a barbecue in Oxford Circle, and later that night officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds near North 26th Street, with both taken to area hospitals, according to NBC10.
City Homicide Tally and Where to Report Tips
Even with the holiday shootings, citywide homicide numbers remain below last year’s pace. Philadelphia Police Department statistics listed 84 homicides as of July 4, fewer than at this point in 2023. The department is urging anyone with information on these cases to call its anonymous tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477), according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at about 7:28 a.m. Police said no arrests have been made in connection with any of the incidents, and investigators are tracking multiple leads, as reported by NBC10.
