Mental Health America of Greater Houston is taking its Care Connect platform statewide, turning what started as a Houston-area navigation and provider-search tool into a Texas-wide lifeline for people trying to find mental health care. The goal is to close the gap between realizing you need help and actually landing an appointment, especially in places where services are scarce or hard to figure out.
What Care Connect Does
The program combines a searchable online directory with a live helpline and hands-on navigation so users can connect with vetted therapists and other behavioral health services. Searches can be filtered by insurance, language, ZIP code and clinical specialty, and the nonprofit says eligible users may qualify for up to six free sessions with participating providers, according to Mental Health America of Greater Houston.
Navigation and Network
Care Connect backs up its search tool with one-on-one guidance from bilingual resource specialists who offer personalized coaching, follow-up support and help with scheduling and insurance questions. The service ties into a vetted network reported to include more than 1,000 providers and services across Texas, and when local options are thin the nonprofit can connect callers with master's-level clinicians who are supervised by licensed professionals, as reported by CultureMap Houston.
“Care Connect was about a two-year planning process,” President and CEO Renae Vania Tomczak told CultureMap Houston, explaining that growing demand from outside the nonprofit’s traditional footprint helped drive the decision to go statewide. “No one should have to navigate mental health challenges alone,” she added.
Why It Matters in Texas
The need is significant. Mental Health America’s state rankings indicate that roughly 21% of Texas adults, about 4.7 million people, experienced a mental health condition in the most recent data, and the state still performs poorly on access-to-care measures. That mix of high demand and limited access is exactly what Care Connect is designed to tackle, according to Mental Health America.
How to Get Connected
Texans can start by using the online search tool or by calling the Care Connect helpline to talk with a bilingual resource specialist during business hours. The service is free and available anywhere in the state. For direct access, visit Mental Health America of Greater Houston or call the helpline listed on the nonprofit’s site.
