A major collision has shut down Schertz Parkway at Weiderstein on the morning of July 4, clogging one of the city’s key routes just as thousands head to the Fourth of July Jubilee at Pickrell Park. Police are warning parade-goers to pack extra patience, leave early and expect a messy drive into the celebrations while first responders work the scene.
Police traffic alert and alternate route
Per the Schertz Police Department, officers reported the closure at about 8:40 a.m. and described the crash as a major collision. Schertz Parkway is shut down at Weiderstein while emergency crews work the scene and traffic is being diverted around the area.
Drivers trying to reach the parade staging area are being advised to use FM 3009 to Elbel instead. Police also cautioned that nearby frontage roads and I-35 access points could be backed up as drivers hunt for workarounds.
How the closure affects Jubilee traffic
The timing is especially rough for the city’s 50th annual Fourth of July Jubilee at Pickrell Park, a cornerstone holiday event that draws big crowds. According to the City of Schertz, shuttle service is running from the Schertz Soccer Complex and additional parking is available along FM 1518 to help move visitors into the park.
With Schertz Parkway out of commission at Weiderstein, that whole system is likely to feel the squeeze. Local coverage notes the city’s shuttle service will run every 15 minutes during event hours, which could mean longer waits and more congestion around pickup points while the roadway is blocked.
Alternate routes and practical tips
Police are steering drivers toward FM 3009 and Elbel to reach parade staging and parking areas, and anyone doing drop-offs or pick-ups should plan on extra time. Officers on the ground are directing traffic, so it is worth following their cues even if the detours feel a bit roundabout.
The Schertz Police Department says it will post updates as they become available on the Schertz Police Department Facebook page. Officials have not released information about injuries or the cause of the crash, and investigators remain on scene. Until Schertz Parkway reopens at Weiderstein, motorists should expect delays and a slower roll into the holiday festivities.
