A tense burglary call in Culver City turned into a three-hour overnight standoff, as a knife-wielding suspect holed up in a commercial garage and forced police to lock down part of South Robertson Boulevard late Sunday into early Monday.
According to the Westside Current, officers were called around 8:45 p.m. Sunday to a reported burglary at a commercial property in the 3700 block of South Robertson Boulevard. Police told the outlet the suspect allegedly barricaded himself in the business’s garage, brandished a knife and threatened to harm members of the public. Officers identified the man as 68-year-old Larry Rush of Los Angeles. He was treated for minor injuries and booked into the Culver City jail on suspicion of commercial burglary, vehicle burglary, and on two outstanding felony warrants.
Police Response and Standoff Resolution
Police activated their crisis negotiation team, and negotiators spent more than three hours working to talk Rush into surrendering peacefully, the Westside Current reports. Officers ultimately deployed less-lethal tools and a police K-9, allowing them to take Rush into custody at about 12:30 a.m. The Culver City Police Department notes its K-9 teams are trained for building searches and suspect apprehension. “No officers or members of the public were injured,” police said.
Charges and What Comes Next
Rush remains in custody at the Culver City jail while prosecutors review the case and decide on formal charges. Court dates and additional details were not immediately available.
