A late-night two-alarm fire tore through a house at 485 Ridgewood Ave in Cypress Hills on Thursday, sending two residents and a firefighter to the hospital and flooding the block with fire trucks and ambulances.
FDNY response and timeline
According to News 12, firefighters arrived just after 11:30 p.m. to find the Ridgewood Ave home burning and quickly upgraded the call to a two-alarm fire. That move brought in roughly 141 FDNY and EMS personnel to the scene.
Crews battled the flames for nearly 90 minutes before bringing the fire under control. Two residents and one firefighter were taken by EMS to a nearby hospital, News 12 reported.
A street with recent big blazes
This is not the first serious fire on this stretch of Ridgewood Ave this spring. In May, a blaze at 503 Ridgewood Ave drew hazmat units after firefighters discovered a cache of lithium-ion batteries, according to Hoodline's coverage of the lithium battery inferno.
Victims and investigation
Officials have not yet identified an official cause of Thursday night's fire. City investigators were expected to comb through the scene to determine what sparked the blaze, according to News 12.
Authorities also did not immediately release the conditions of the injured residents and firefighter.
How residents can reduce risk
The FDNY continues to urge New Yorkers to keep working smoke alarms, regularly practice home escape plans and stay cautious when charging, storing or discarding lithium-ion batteries. Those guidelines and more safety tips are available on the department's official pages. For programs like Sounding the Alarm and additional resources, visit the FDNY.
Ridgewood Ave stayed busy late into the night as investigators worked the scene and emergency crews wrapped up operations. Officials say more information will be released as the investigation moves forward, and we will provide updates if and when new details are made public.
