A sudden, unplanned power outage in Waikiki and Kapahulu cut electricity to more than 3,000 Hawaiian Electric customers on Tuesday, leaving one of Oahu's busiest corridors in the dark. Crews moved into the area to restore service, and officials stressed the outage was not part of a public safety power shutoff while the cause remained under investigation.
Hawaiian Electric reported roughly 3,410 customers without power in the Waikiki and Kapahulu area, according to KITV. The utility posted updates on its outage map and X feed as crews responded to the affected circuits, per Hawaiian Electric.
Tourist Strip In The Dark, Again
Even a brief outage in Waikiki's hotel and restaurant zone can ripple through room keys, kitchen lines and already tight traffic. A similar mid-day cut in January hit nearly 2,000 customers and tangled streets, local coverage shows. Hawaii News Now reported that earlier incident, which underscored how quickly outages can disrupt Waikiki's packed businesses.
What To Do If Your Lights Go Out
Customers without electricity are asked to report an outage via the Hawaiian Electric outage map or by calling the Oahu trouble line at 1-855-304-1212. The company also posts real-time updates on X at @HwnElectric.
Hawaiian Electric advises customers to stay well clear of any downed lines and to run generators only outdoors and away from windows for safety.
City crews and Hawaiian Electric were on scene Tuesday evening, and officials said they will provide additional details as crews learn more. We will update this story when further information is released.
