A routine walk to the mailbox ended in tragedy Tuesday morning when an 86-year-old man was hit and killed by a vehicle in Cecil Township, Washington County, according to county officials.

Emergency crews were called to the scene after the man was struck while crossing the road to get his mail. He was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Washington County Coroner Tim Warco told WPXI that his office was notified at around 9:37 a.m. The victim, identified as 86-year-old Robert Coen, was pronounced dead at 11 a.m. Warco said the cause and manner of death remain pending further examination.

Investigation Underway

Cecil Township police are leading the investigation into the collision, with assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police crash reconstruction team, according to the Observer-Reporter. Officials have not said whether the driver stayed at the scene or if any charges are being considered.

Local agencies, including Southbridge EMS, the Cecil Township Fire Department and PennDOT, responded to the scene while investigators documented the roadway and surrounding area to piece together what happened, per WPXI.
