A late-morning drive along Maricamp Road turned tragic Friday when a pickup veered out of its lane on County Road 464, crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with an SUV just west of SE 51st Avenue near Ocala. The crash happened at about 10:08 a.m., killing the pickup’s driver and sending multiple people to nearby hospitals, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. A passenger in the truck was seriously hurt, while the SUV driver walked away with minor injuries.

Authorities Outline Chaotic Crash Sequence

The Florida Highway Patrol told News4JAX that the pickup was heading west in the outside lane on County Road 464 when it failed to stay in its lane, drifted onto the right shoulder and hit a traffic sign. Troopers said the truck then struck two ditches, bounced back onto the roadway and swung left into the eastbound lanes, where it crashed into the oncoming SUV.

According to investigators, the violent chain reaction did not end there. After the impact with the SUV, the pickup continued on, hitting a fence and a tree before finally coming to a stop. The Florida Highway Patrol is still working to piece together every detail of what led up to the wreck, and the crash remains under active investigation.

Victims Identified by Age, Not Name

The patrol told News4JAX that the man behind the wheel of the pickup was a 67-year-old Ocala resident, who died in the crash. His passenger, a 52-year-old woman from Ocala, suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the SUV was identified only as a 59-year-old Ocala man, who sustained minor injuries in the collision. Troopers said next of kin for those involved have been notified, but names have not yet been released publicly.

Crash Revives Long-Running Safety Concerns

The fatal wreck unfolded along Maricamp Road, also known as County Road 464, a corridor that has repeatedly landed in local headlines for serious crashes and pedestrian deaths in recent years. Reporting by the Ocala Gazette notes that the area’s track record has already prompted safety projects and a federal grant aimed at calming the corridor.

According to the Ocala Gazette, county and state transportation officials have outlined plans for sidewalks, medians and other design changes along parts of the stretch to reduce conflicts between drivers and people on foot. They have also pointed to engineering upgrades and stepped-up traffic enforcement as key pieces of a broader push to make Maricamp Road safer.

Troopers continue to investigate Friday’s crash and have not publicly released the names of those involved. Anyone with information that could help the Florida Highway Patrol is urged to contact the agency.
