A massive search in the Straits of Mackinac ended in tragedy after crews recovered a body beneath the Mackinac Bridge, following security video that appeared to show someone leaving a vehicle and jumping into the water below.
Michigan State Police troopers and marine teams spent more than a day combing the waters under the five-mile span after an abandoned vehicle was discovered on the bridge. The find triggered a multi-agency water search that pulled in resources from across the region.
Troopers were first called to the bridge at about 12:35 a.m. last Thursday, when an unoccupied car was reported on the span. Surveillance footage then showed a person getting out of the vehicle and jumping from the bridge. Search and recovery operations in the Straits continued into the next day, and Michigan State Police said the body was found at about 6 p.m. last Friday, Lt. Benjamin Eckola said, according to The Detroit News.
Mackinac Bridge context
The Mackinac Bridge, often called the "Mighty Mac," carries Interstate 75 across the Straits of Mackinac between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace and stretches roughly five miles. The span is managed by the Mackinac Bridge Authority, and the Michigan Department of Transportation coordinates safety and traffic operations for events such as the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk. The Mackinac Bridge Authority and MDOT share schedules and public safety information for people crossing the bridge.
Investigation and resources
Michigan State Police are leading the investigation and say they are working with local responders in the Upper Peninsula. Authorities have not released the person's identity as the inquiry continues. The MSP Newsroom outlines the department's marine and aviation resources that support water recoveries and other critical incident responses.
