A child was killed Wednesday morning after being hit by a bus on Blauvelt Road in Monsey, in the Town of Ramapo, according to police. Officers and emergency crews got to the scene just after 9 a.m. and tried lifesaving measures, but the child did not survive. Authorities have not released the child’s name, and the Ramapo Police Department is leading the investigation.
Video from the scene showed a yellow school bus surrounded by law enforcement, according to CBS News. Monsey Scoop reported that Hatzoloh EMS and other responders attempted to revive the child and described the victim as being in traumatic arrest. The Ramapo Police Department has confirmed it is investigating the collision.
Not the first deadly child crash in 2026
This tragedy adds to a grim list of serious traffic incidents in the area this year. In January, a 5-year-old was struck and later pronounced dead after being hit by a school bus on Ostilla Avenue in New Square, according to the Rockland Times. In June, an 8-year-old girl died after being hit while riding a bicycle in Pomona, per News 12.
Investigation and safety questions
According to School Transportation News, investigations of fatal school-bus crashes typically involve the Crash Investigation Unit, detailed scene measurements, interviews and vehicle inspections, and in prior Ramapo cases the bus has been inspected by the New York State Department of Transportation. The outlet notes these probes can take days or weeks as investigators review video, witness accounts and mechanical checks. Officials have not released any information about the bus operator or whether charges are being considered.
The town and county have not provided further details about how the crash unfolded. This is a developing story, and more information is expected as authorities continue their investigation.
