A wildfire known as the Mountain View Fire is burning along State Route 530 near Rockport between mileposts 64 and 66, according to state transportation officials Thursday evening. At the time of the alert, crews from the Washington Department of Natural Resources were fighting the blaze while the highway remained open.
In an update from WSDOT Traffic, the agency said the Mountain View Fire is burning along SR 530 in Rockport between MP 64 and 66. The post noted that Washington Department of Natural Resources crews were on scene and that SR 530 "remains open at this time."
WSDOT North added that it "stands by ready to support as needed" while DNR crews work the incident. Officials did not immediately report any evacuations, injuries or damage to structures.
Where the fire is burning
The fire is burning on SR 530 between mileposts 64 and 66, on a rural stretch that only reopened earlier this year after crews repaired flood damage from December's atmospheric-river event. That work involved a rebuilt 300-foot embankment and was covered in January by KIRO 7.
Travel and safety
WSDOT noted the highway was open at the time of the alert, but conditions can change quickly when a wildfire is active. Drivers are urged to give crews plenty of room, be prepared for short delays, and keep an eye on the state's real-time travel map for updates via WSDOT.
Why this matters
The incident is unfolding during a season that state officials have warned could be unusually challenging because of low snowpack and dry conditions that increase wildfire risk. The Washington Department of Natural Resources has pushed preparedness and increased staffing ahead of summer, a concern highlighted in recent reporting by The Olympian.
This story will be updated as agencies release more information. For now, officials ask motorists not to stop near the scene and to follow directions from on-scene crews and official agency channels.
