A south St. Petersburg block turned into an active homicide scene last night after officers found a deceased person in the 5800 block of 11th Street South. Police labeled the death suspicious and held back the victim’s identity while forensic teams worked. Neighbors looked on as evidence markers went down and police tape sealed off the residential stretch.
According to Tampa Free Press, investigators suspect foul play. Officers locked down the area to protect possible evidence while forensic crews searched the scene for clues. The outlet reported that police are withholding identifying details about the person found as detectives focus on notifying next of kin. Detectives have also asked anyone who saw or heard anything out of the ordinary in the 5800 block to reach out to authorities.
No Suspect in Custody
As reported by FOX 13, the St. Petersburg Police Department currently has no suspect in custody and says the investigation is still very much active. Officials have not released a cause of death or other details about what led up to the discovery, and investigators have not indicated when more information might be made public.
Recent Cases Add to Unease
This week’s discovery is one of several recent suspicious death investigations in the St. Petersburg area. Earlier in June, another body was recovered near Grandview Park, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Local law enforcement has been handling multiple active inquiries across the city in recent weeks, although authorities have not linked the cases.
How to Help Investigators
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the St. Petersburg Police Department Homicide Unit at 727-893-4823 or 727-893-4845, or the Communications Center at 727-893-7780. The department’s website notes that tips can be submitted anonymously, and additional contact information and resources are listed on the SPPD Unsolved Homicides page.
The department says detectives will release updates as the investigation moves forward and is urging residents to report any tips that might help clarify what happened. FOX 13 reports that the probe remains ongoing and that investigators are still working the scene.
