Dozens of Frederick County drivers woke up Thursday to a nasty surprise: car windows smashed out in what authorities are calling an overnight vandalism spree that stretched across the county. Between midnight and 6 a.m., nearly 40 separate incidents were reported. No injuries were reported, and investigators say nothing appears to have been stolen from the vehicles.
According to CBS Baltimore, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office logged reports at Jefferson Technology Community, the Spring Ridge senior-living parking lot and Oakdale Villages near Oakdale High School. Photos released by the sheriff’s office and shared on social media show cars lined up with driver’s-side glass shattered, turning parking lots into fields of broken glass.
Local station WFMD reported that as of Thursday afternoon deputies had not identified any suspects. Investigators urged residents and commuters who were in the affected neighborhoods to pull doorbell-camera, home-security and dash-cam footage for anything that looks even slightly off. Detectives are collecting evidence and following up on tips from neighbors and property managers, but so far no arrests have been announced.
Investigators Seek Footage And Tips
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who was out overnight, or who has cameras pointed toward streets and parking areas, to share what they have. As reported by DC News Now, anyone with information is urged to call the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 301-600-1046. Investigators say video clips can help them build a timeline of the vandalism and potentially identify whoever is responsible.
How This Fits A Wider Pattern
Vehicle vandalism and targeted break-ins have been a recurring headache in the region this year. In March, authorities reported a string of break-ins in the Urbana and Spring Ridge areas where thieves went after airbags, according to MoCo Show. Officials have repeatedly reminded drivers to lock their vehicles, keep valuables out of sight and, whenever possible, park in well-lit spots. Those familiar safety tips are getting extra emphasis now as deputies work through the latest round of smashed windows.
The investigation remains ongoing, and deputies say they will release updates as new information comes in. Anyone with footage, tips or even small observations from the overnight hours is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office at 301-600-1046.
