A four-vehicle crash at a busy Matthews intersection turned deadly Wednesday night, leaving a 40-year-old motorcyclist dead and another person injured. Police say the collision happened at East John Street and McKee Road, where officers arrived to find the motorcyclist, later identified as Jonathan Hill, unresponsive. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but Hill did not survive. One other person was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, and traffic in the area was tied up while crews worked the scene.
According to WCCB Charlotte, officers were called out around 9:30 p.m. and arrived to find a serious crash involving four vehicles, including Hill’s motorcycle. The station reported that the Matthews Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit has taken over the investigation.
Rising road deaths locally
The deadly wreck comes against a backdrop of worsening crash trends in the region. Mecklenburg County recorded a record number of traffic fatalities in 2024, part of a broader rise in severe collisions across North Carolina, according to NCDOT's Crash Facts.
Investigation continues
Police told WCCB Charlotte that what led up to the crash is still unclear, and investigators with the Traffic Safety Unit are continuing to piece together the sequence of events. An official crash report is typically released after reconstruction and review, and authorities had not yet made public any additional details about the vehicles or passengers involved in this initial update.
