A 42-year-old man’s short-lived ride in a neighbor’s stolen car ended in handcuffs Saturday in Plant City, after deputies tracked down the vehicle and stopped it on a busy roadway. Authorities say video from the incident appears to show the driver pointing a firearm at people while cruising through the neighborhood. No injuries were reported, and the man was taken into custody.
Deputies Located The Stolen Car On State Road 574
According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office post, deputies found the reported stolen vehicle in the 4500 block of State Road 574 and detained the driver. The post identifies the suspect as 42-year-old German Hernandez Vazquez and says he was captured on video pointing a firearm at victims in the area. Deputies say he was arrested and booked on multiple felony charges.
Statewide Operations Show The Wider Problem
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has at times dismantled organized auto-theft operations that move stolen vehicles across county lines. In a multi-year probe, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement recovered dozens of stolen, high-end cars and arrested more than 20 people. Investigators say those larger cases highlight how some vehicle thefts are tied to broader fraud and VIN-alteration schemes.
Charges And Court Process
Hillsborough deputies say Vazquez faces charges that include grand theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting without violence, according to the sheriff's office. It was not immediately clear whether bond had been set, and the State Attorney's Office will decide whether to formally file charges. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the defendant is presumed innocent until convicted.
