An early-morning structure fire tore through an abandoned building at 100 Lewis Street on Friday, sending flames and smoke into the air just north of downtown San Antonio. The building was reported vacant, and as of the first round of updates, officials had not released any word on a possible cause or whether anyone was hurt.
Reporter Victoria Arredondo with WOAI shared a live update from the scene at 5:56 a.m. Friday, then refreshed the developing story shortly after. The outlet reported that the structure at 100 Lewis Street was abandoned and emphasized that details were still coming in.
Lewis Street’s Recent Fire History
This is not the first time Lewis Street has seen serious fire activity. In 2015, a blaze at 106 Lewis Street displaced 10 people and triggered an investigation by the San Antonio Fire Department’s arson investigators, according to the San Antonio Express-News. That earlier incident helps explain why vacant or boarded-up properties in the area tend to get extra attention from fire officials.
What Investigators Look For Next
The San Antonio Fire Department notes that its Arson Bureau is tasked with determining the cause of fires and explosions inside city limits, often teaming up with other agencies when scenes are larger or more complex. As of the initial bulletin on Friday’s blaze, no cause had been released. More information is expected once investigators have combed through the site and wrapped up their work.
Anyone who saw the fire, captured video, or has information that might help the investigation is urged to contact local authorities.
