Rail safety in the North Bay
Crashes involving people on or near the tracks are not new along the SMART corridor, and the Piner Road area has seen tragedy before. In January, a bicyclist was fatally struck at the same crossing, according to reporting by SFGATE.
Past incidents have triggered temporary service disruptions while investigators documented scenes and transit officials worked to move riders around the affected areas, a now-familiar drill for North Bay commuters who rely on SMART trains.
City efforts and next steps
Santa Rosa officials have been trying to get ahead of these kinds of collisions with a slate of crossing and active-transportation upgrades in the northwest part of the city. That work has included a new HAWK signal at the Piner Creek Trail crossing and a planned Highway 101 bike-and-pedestrian overcrossing, according to the City of Santa Rosa.
City transportation staff and their transit partners typically huddle after serious crashes to review safety measures and public messaging. Investigators in Wednesday's case said they expect to release more information as the probe moves forward.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the collision or has video from the area to preserve that footage and contact the Santa Rosa Police Department tip line at (707) 543-3600. Authorities said they will share additional updates as they become available.
