Annapolis police say a loose dog turned a quiet courtyard into a brief chaos zone on Saturday, biting two people and two other dogs before charging at an officer and being shot.
One of the people who was bitten went to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the other declined medical care. Anne Arundel County Animal Services later took possession of the dog’s body, and county officials say the pet’s owners were identified and notified.
What police say
Officers were called to the unit block of Tiburon Court after reports that an aggressive, loose dog had already bitten two people and two dogs. When an officer arrived, the animal allegedly charged at them, and the officer shot the dog to prevent further harm, according to WBFF.
Animal Services response
Anne Arundel County Animal Services took custody of the dog’s body, and officials say the owners were located and informed of what happened. The county agency notes that its officers enforce local and state animal laws, respond to animal-related complaints, and conduct bite investigations and public-safety assessments, according to Anne Arundel County Animal Services.
Context
This latest case comes on the heels of a high-profile May incident in Annapolis, when a man was arrested after allegedly shooting a leashed dog on Madison Street. That earlier confrontation led to criminal charges and a wave of community attention, as reported in the Annapolis man charged after dog shot case.
What residents should know
After any reported bite, Animal Services and the county health department typically team up to assess rabies risk and confirm ownership of the animal. Guidance on how to report bites, how quarantine works, and how animals can be reclaimed is posted online. Residents with questions about reporting or investigation procedures can review the agency’s FAQ or contact Animal Services’ field line for next steps, per Anne Arundel County Animal Services.
WBFF carried the initial account of the call and the officer-involved shooting. Authorities did not immediately release additional details about the dog’s breed or indicate whether any criminal charges might follow.
