Sunday afternoon turned serious in Forward Township when an all-terrain vehicle flipped in steep woods off Eckstein Road, sending a rider to a Pittsburgh hospital by helicopter.
Emergency crews had to climb down into a ravine off the 100 block of Eckstein Road to reach the injured man, who had suffered a head injury. Rescuers then carried him back up through the woods to a waiting medical helicopter. The ATV itself was later located roughly 75 yards down the hillside in thick brush.
According to dispatchers, multiple crews were called in to get the rider out, as reported by ButlerRadio. The outlet reports that the man was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with a head injury. Authorities have not released his name or provided any update on his condition.
Rescue And Scene
The wreck happened along the 100 block of Eckstein Road, a rural route in Forward Township. Responders traced the crash site down a steep slope and found the ATV about 75 yards below the road in dense brush. With limited access and rough terrain in that stretch of woods, crews had to call in additional ground units to safely carry the man out.
ATV Safety And Context
Serious head injuries are a well-known risk in ATV rollovers, especially in remote wooded areas where getting to a hospital can take time. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that off-highway-vehicle incidents lead to an annual average of hundreds of deaths and about 100,000 emergency-department-treated injuries. The agency stresses the importance of helmets and formal safety training for riders.
Basic steps such as wearing a helmet, completing certified ATV training and avoiding paved roads on these vehicles can significantly cut the risk of severe injury.
ButlerRadio first reported the dispatch details and description of the rescue. As of that report, county and township officials had not issued any public statement about the crash. This story will be updated if authorities release further information on the incident or the rider’s condition.
