A semi-truck belonging to a small Folsom auto-transport company was set on fire Sunday behind a strip mall on the 1000 block of Riley Street, marking the second vehicle fire on that block this month. The owner, Jeremy Morrow, says the burned rig was the only truck in his fleet and that losing it has left him scrambling for income while he recovers from open-heart surgery.
According to the Folsom Police Department watch commander log, officers responded shortly before noon and recorded that "unknown suspect(s) punched out the passenger door lock and set fire inside the cab area of truck." The log lists the location as the 1000 block of Riley Street behind a small strip mall.
The Sacramento Bee reported that the vehicle belongs to Jeremy Morrow, who started Morrow and Sons Logistics last year after relocating from Woodland to Folsom, and that the truck was the only vehicle he owned. The outlet also noted this follows a June 15 incident in which investigators said two people allegedly placed cardboard under a vehicle and set it ablaze, and that police said children were seen nearby then. "That's how I feed my family, and now I'm pretty much screwed," Morrow told The Sacramento Bee.
Arson Penalties Under California Law
Arson can be prosecuted as a felony in California, with penalties that vary depending on whether a structure or person is harmed. Property arson is punishable starting at 16 months in state prison, and penalties increase for more serious offenses. See California Legislature for the statute's details.
Morrow told The Sacramento Bee that he hauls Cadillacs, Chevrolets and GMCs picked up at a train station in Milpitas and that the loss of the truck hits his family's income hard. Folsom police have not announced any arrests and are asking anyone with information to contact the department.
