A quiet walk home in Flushing turned violent on June 18 when a man on an electric scooter allegedly shoved a 12-year-old boy to the pavement and punched him in the face as the child walked with his mother, police said. The boy was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, where staff listed him in stable condition. Neighbors said the seemingly random attack rattled the block and sent police combing through nearby surveillance footage.
Police released surveillance stills of the suspect and are asking for help identifying him. The rider was caught on camera balancing a large jug of orange juice on his scooter, according to the New York Post. The outlet reported that the NYPD described the suspect as wearing a blue shirt, khaki shorts and white sneakers, and said the assault happened around 9 p.m. near Blossom Avenue and Main Street.
Authorities say the man rode up to the boy, grabbed him, pushed him to the ground, then struck him before speeding off on the scooter.
Where This Fits In Citywide Enforcement
Moped and scooter crimes have been a recurring headache for city officials, and enforcement has ramped up in response. City crews recently crushed more than 200 mopeds seized in sweeps, part of a broader push to clear unregistered and potentially dangerous two-wheelers from streets and sidewalks. Officials say the crackdown is meant to cut off quick getaways and keep pedestrians safer in busy commercial corridors.
Police Appeal For Tips
The NYPD is urging anyone with information about the Flushing assault to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782), according to the New York Post. The outlet also reported that detectives are especially interested in any cellphone footage or doorbell-camera video that may have captured the suspect or the moments before and after the assault.
Investigators are continuing to canvass businesses and review surveillance from the Blossom Avenue and Main Street area. Anyone who believes they saw what happened or has video from that evening is urged to contact Crime Stoppers and share it to help move the case forward.
