Less than a month before the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge was supposed to roar along Sheboygan’s lakefront, the engines went quiet. The powerboat races were canceled on short notice, a late change that has waterfront businesses scrambling to regroup for what was expected to be one of the busiest weekends of the summer.
The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) pulled out of the August 8–9 event after telling city officials it could not provide the staffing and operational support needed to put the races on safely, according to the City of Sheboygan.
In its statement, the City of Sheboygan said IHRA informed officials on July 13 that it did not have the staff and operational backing required to host the offshore races. The city plans to keep the land-based weekend programming in place, including a Friday block party at City Green and the Bites & Brews festivities at King Park, while it evaluates future race partnerships and posts updates on its news page.
Local business owners and boaters told TMJ4 that the last-minute decision hit operations hard. Tiffany Lange, general manager of Anglers Pub & Grill, said the restaurant had already stocked up and booked a band, calling the cancellation “a huge disappointment.” Boater Allen Patterson described the announcement as “shocking,” and longtime spectator Richard Feustel said he would miss the chaotic waterfront buzz the races usually bring to town.
The event had been promoted as a three-day waterfront festival with boat parades, food trucks and rows of vendors drawing out-of-town spectators and boosting local hotels and restaurants, with prime viewing along South Pier and King Park, according to Visit Sheboygan County. Organizers had billed the weekend as a family-friendly showcase meant to juice downtown foot traffic and marina activity.
Series Problems Left Races on Shaky Ground
Industry coverage has pointed to months of turbulence inside IHRA, including leadership changes, canceled rounds and budget shortfalls that left the group struggling to deliver events this season. Speed on the Water reports that IHRA cut other 2026 races and, after an internal review, told Sheboygan it could not continue serving as the event promoter.
City Tries to Salvage Shoreline Festivities
City officials say they will work with local partners to adjust the weekend schedule and preserve as many land-based activities as possible while they evaluate future race partners, according to the city’s release. Staff are encouraging vendors and attendees to watch the news page for updates and to contact the mayor’s office with questions.
Title sponsor Mercury Racing said it was “disappointed” by IHRA’s decision and is exploring opportunities to bring high-performance racing back to Wisconsin in 2027, Powerboat News reported. For now, operators who had counted on the weekend say they will pivot their plans and hold out hope that the raceboats return to Sheboygan’s lakefront next year.
