A Sunday evening at a Bedford-Stuyvesant playground turned terrifying when a gunman opened fire near children, wounding two people and sending families sprinting for safety as police rushed to the scene. Authorities said both victims were expected to survive.
Who Was Hurt And Where
According to the New York Post, the victims were a 64-year-old man who was struck in the left leg and a 33-year-old man who was shot in the right wrist. Both were taken to local hospitals and listed in stable condition. The older victim was rushed to Kings County Hospital, while the younger man was treated at Interfaith Medical Center. The shooter fled the scene in a black Jeep, the outlet reported.
Playground's Troubled History
Raymond Bush Playground, at Madison Street and Marcus Garvey Boulevard, has seen high-profile gun violence before. A 2020 cookout shooting there killed a toddler, as reported by Gothamist. That earlier tragedy led to vigils and renewed calls for violence-prevention efforts in the neighborhood.
What Police Are Saying
As of Sunday night, the NYPD had not announced any arrests and the investigation remained active, the New York Post reports. Detectives were working to track down witnesses and surveillance video as they try to identify the shooter.
