More than a year after 21-year-old Lanai Ariyana Dees was gunned down in a South Los Angeles alley, her case is back in the spotlight. Detectives and her family are again pleading for help, as local TV coverage of what was teased as “new developments” collides with a recently restored county reward and a familiar message from investigators: the case is still unsolved, and they need the public’s eyes and ears.
How investigators say it happened
According to investigators, Dees was driving in an alley near Century Boulevard shortly after midnight on Nov. 17, 2024, when a dark-colored midsize SUV pulled up alongside her car. Someone inside the SUV opened fire, striking Dees in the head. Her vehicle kept rolling west until it slammed into a concrete staircase, where she was later pronounced dead. Those details emerged after a family news conference and through the sheriff’s investigation, as reported by CBS Los Angeles.
County reestablishes and raises reward
On March 17, 2026, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to bring back and boost the reward in Dees’ case, increasing it from $10,000 to $15,000 in hopes of shaking loose new leads. In its motion, the board notes that detectives suspect the shooting may have been gang-related, but that Dees herself was not believed to be the intended target. The motion also lists direct contact information for investigators and urges anyone with information to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, according to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
Family renews public plea
Dees’ mother, Dahlin Dees, has refused to let the case fade from public view. At a May 2025 press conference, she said, “my baby didn’t deserve this,” promising to keep fighting for accountability. Coverage of that earlier news conference, when a $10,000 reward was announced, helped push the case back into the headlines. The sheriff’s Homicide Bureau has also circulated surveillance images of a dark-colored SUV and urged neighbors to comb through any home or business video that might have captured the vehicle, according to ABC7 Los Angeles.
How to help
Detectives are asking anyone who knows something, or thinks they might, to step forward. Tips can be reported directly to the LASD Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477). Those contact options are listed in the county motion and in sheriff materials, and investigators say even small details could matter. The board motion with reporting instructions and phone numbers is available through the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
Why this matters now
On July 15, local station FOX 11 Los Angeles aired a short segment that teased “new developments” in the cold-case investigation, pulling fresh attention back to Dees’ killing and the long-running search for answers. The renewed coverage mirrors the board’s March vote and the family’s ongoing public appeals, and it underscores what detectives have been repeating for months: community tips and video can breathe life into stalled cases. The FOX 11 segment is available online and directs viewers to the sheriff’s tip lines and released images, according to FOX 11 Los Angeles.
