Pittsburgh police say a Downtown drug investigation came to a head this week when detectives hit a Stanwix Street residence and two vehicles, walking away with a handgun, a haul of suspected narcotics and roughly $12,000 in cash. The searches, carried out by detectives from the bureau’s Violence Prevention Unit as part of ongoing work in the Central Business District, ended with two people in custody on felony drug charges and a preliminary hearing set for later this month.
According to CBS Pittsburgh, police identified the suspects as 24-year-old Kyree Hairston-Mitchell and 23-year-old Mya Bryant. Both were taken into custody on Monday after detectives executed search warrants at the Stanwix Street home and at two vehicles. Police reported seizing heroin, cocaine, marijuana, various prescription pills, a handgun and about $12,000 in cash. Court records cited by CBS show Hairston-Mitchell remains in the Allegheny County Jail after being unable to post $25,000 bail, while Bryant was arraigned and released on a nonmonetary bond. CBS also reports a passenger in one of the vehicles was taken into custody on a warrant out of Ohio, and that both defendants are scheduled for a preliminary hearing later this month.
What police say they found
Officers described the seized drugs and cash as packaged in quantities consistent with distribution rather than simple possession, and noted that the recovered handgun added to the severity of the case. Detectives have not yet released specific weights or pill counts for the narcotics. Prosecutors are expected to review the full case file and evidence before any formal indictments are filed.
Violence Prevention Unit stepping up downtown enforcement
The bureau’s Violence Prevention Unit has been rolling out a series of targeted enforcement efforts across Pittsburgh this year, including Downtown, focusing on disrupting local narcotics supply lines. As outlined by the city's public safety blotter, the unit regularly coordinates residence and vehicle searches when investigators develop leads pointing to suspected trafficking activity.
Court calendar and what’s next
Both defendants are currently listed for a preliminary hearing later this month. That hearing will determine whether the charges move forward and whether either defendant will remain detained as the case proceeds. Because the investigation is still active, additional details are expected to surface through court filings and other official records as prosecutors decide on next steps.
Police are asking anyone with information related to the investigation to contact the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. Investigators say that tips and video evidence can help them piece together how drugs and weapons are moving through the Downtown corridor. This story will be updated as new court documents or agency statements become available.
