A one-story house in the 2000 block of SW 4th Street in Ocala was left in ruins after a suspicious early-morning fire just after 6:30 a.m. Friday. Firefighters arrived to find flames tearing through the roof and brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes. No one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported.
According to WKMG / ClickOrlando, Ocala Fire Rescue crews rolled out right after the call came in and arrived to find heavy fire already showing from the home. People in the area told firefighters they believed the blaze may have been intentionally set. The case has since been handed over to the Florida State Fire Marshal and the Ocala Police Department for further investigation.
Investigation underway
With that referral, state arson investigators are now working alongside local officers to sort out how the fire started and whether a crime was committed. The Florida State Fire Marshal's Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosives Investigations notes that it provides assistance around the clock and operates field offices in the region to support local agencies on complex or suspicious fires.
Local context
Marion County has seen its share of suspicious fires in recent months. In January, a local man was arrested after allegedly setting his own home ablaze, Ocala-News reported. Investigators in such cases typically lean on a mix of witness statements, physical evidence such as accelerant residue, and, when available, surveillance footage, according to training materials from the U.S. Fire Administration.
How to help
Authorities are asking anyone who saw something or has video from the area around the time of Friday's fire to come forward. Information can be shared with the Ocala Police Department at 352-369-7000, according to the department's public materials. Tips can also be reported to the State Fire Marshal's arson hotline at 1-877-NO-ARSON (1-877-662-7766) or submitted online. The bureau notes that tips leading to arrests may qualify for a cash reward.
