A landlord in rural East Nicolaus landed in jail Monday after deputies say he pointed a gun at two tenants during a heated argument on a Sutter County property. The 62-year-old man allegedly refused multiple orders to come out of his home, which pulled in the sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail and turned a tense dispute into a full-blown standoff. No one was hurt.

According to The Sacramento Bee, the confrontation began as a verbal argument that escalated when the landlord "started to force entry and get aggressive." The Bee identified him as a 62-year-old Rio Oso resident and reported that deputies had already responded to earlier calls from the tenants on May 27, July 4 and July 5. The sheriff's office described the situation as "an ongoing issue."

How deputies ended the standoff

Deputies spent roughly two hours trying to talk the man into coming outside before the Special Enforcement Detail, a unit trained for critical incidents and negotiation, was called in, as reported by KCRA. Authorities said the suspect ultimately surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident, while law enforcement maintained a presence on Cornelius Road throughout the response.

Weapons recovered and charges

After the arrest, deputies served a search warrant at the property and recovered a 12-gauge shotgun and a .22-caliber rifle with ammunition, according to The Sacramento Bee. The man was booked into the Sutter County Jail on allegations that include resisting, delaying or obstructing a peace officer; brandishing a firearm in a threatening manner; battery; assault with a firearm; and criminal threats.

What happens next

The Sheriff's Office said the investigation is still active and that prosecutors will decide whether to add or adjust charges, according to the agency's statement reported by the Territorial Dispatch. Officials had not publicly released the suspect's name, beyond his age and Rio Oso address, as of Tuesday afternoon.

Background on the dispute

Local reporting indicates that the tenants' previous calls and the landlord's earlier arrests, including a May 19 battery arrest and a May 29 incident involving an alleged replica firearm, were already in the sheriff's case file on what the agency has called an ongoing conflict, per KCRA. Investigators say they will continue reviewing the full sequence of calls and prior events as the case moves forward.
