Early Sunday morning, a quiet Carroll Gardens block turned chaotic when a car slammed through the front of a deli on Henry Street, shattering the glass storefront and scattering debris across the sidewalk. FDNY and NYPD crews rushed to the scene, and at least two people were taken to a nearby hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.
According to News12, firefighters responded to a 911 call at 8:27 a.m. Citizen video from the scene shows a dark-colored SUV lodged inside the deli at 531 Henry St., with its front end buried in the shop. The outlet also noted a white car nearby with visible damage as authorities continued to investigate what led up to the crash.
Where it happened
Per the New York State Liquor Authority, the ground-floor space at 531 Henry St. has long operated as a neighborhood deli, with records listing Carroll Gardens Gourmet Deli, also known as Garden Gourmet Deli & Grill, at that address. Property listings on StreetEasy show the building includes a commercial storefront with residential units above, a reminder that crashes like this can rattle both small businesses and the people living right upstairs.
Not an isolated problem
Crashes that send vehicles into buildings have been popping up around Brooklyn this month. An apparent road-rage collision on July 8 sent a car into a Bedford-Stuyvesant building and hospitalized several people, as reported by ABC7 New York. In Carroll Gardens, FDNY and NYPD officials stayed on the scene while investigators worked to piece together what happened, and News12 reported that authorities had not yet released additional details.
