A normally quiet stretch of Church Avenue in McKees Rocks turned into a tense scene Sunday evening as police and a SWAT team surrounded a home on the 1100 block for several hours. Neighbors reported seeing heavily armed officers moving in and out of the house and said they heard what sounded like a flash-bang device. The street eventually calmed down after 10 p.m., and authorities reported no arrests.
Allegheny County 911 dispatchers told Channel 11 that officers first arrived on the block around 6:45 p.m. A crew from WPXI saw multiple police vehicles idling on nearby streets while the SWAT team repeatedly entered and exited the residence. Neighbors told the station they heard a loud bang at about 9:30 p.m. According to the station, SWAT and other officers cleared out sometime after 10 p.m., again with no arrests reported.
Recent incidents in the borough
Residents in McKees Rocks are on edge for a reason. The borough has already weathered other serious violence this year, including a March shooting that left a woman dead, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Cases like that one have kept public safety at the center of neighborhood conversations as local and county agencies respond to shootings and other high-stress emergencies.
What authorities say
The Allegheny County Police Department is handling the investigation into Sunday night’s incident but did not immediately provide details to Channel 11, according to WPXI. Neighbors said the sudden late-night operation left many people rattled and frustrated, with questions piling up faster than answers.
Reporters have reached out to county officials for more information and will update this story when authorities release additional details. For now, residents on Church Avenue are left replaying an hours long police response that ended with officers driving off and the block reopening late Sunday night, but with little clarity about what exactly unfolded behind that front door.
