Tampa just scored another win in its bid to become a serious deep-tech hub. Tesseract Ventures, a robotics and defense-focused venture studio with roots in Kansas City, has moved its headquarters to Tampa and is gearing up for a major hiring push as it prepares for a Series B funding round. The move plants another tech-heavy operator inside a region that has been working hard to lure startups and corporate headquarters.
As reported by the Tampa Bay Business Journal, CEO John Boucard confirmed the relocation and said the company will launch a "major hiring push" while eyeing a Series B round. "The entrepreneurship community is much different than in the Midwest or even in Kansas City. It's established, it's professional," Boucard told the paper, pointing to Tampa's more mature startup scene as a key draw.
Company footprint and defense ties
Tesseract now lists Tampa alongside Kansas City as studio locations and highlights platforms such as PRISM, MOSAIC and ECHO that it says serve military, construction and agriculture customers, underscoring the technical focus behind the move, according to Tesseract Ventures. Federal contracting records show multiple SBIR and Department of Defense awards and list Tampa as the company's registered headquarters as of May 27, per HigherGov.
Why Tampa?
Economic development groups and recruiters have been working to turn Tampa into a magnet for corporate relocations. The region's mix of talent, lower business costs and proximity to MacDill Air Force Base has made it particularly attractive to defense and space-adjacent startups. The Tampa Bay Economic Development Council points to recent headquarters moves and talent-focused programs as evidence that the market is primed for companies like Tesseract, which need engineering and cleared-tech talent to grow.
What comes next
Tesseract says its initial Tampa hires will emphasize engineering, product and systems roles to support its robotics, drone and data-visualization platforms, in line with the firm's published tech stack and team listings on its site. With a local base and federal contracting experience already in hand, the company is betting that a deeper Tampa footprint will help it recruit talent and accelerate fundraising as it pursues its Series B.
