Tampa woke up warm, sticky and already uncomfortable, with early morning temperatures near 79°F and dewpoints high enough to make the air feel thick. A mostly sunny afternoon is on tap with a high near 94°F, and it will feel closer to 103°F once the humidity kicks the heat index into overdrive. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible after 8 a.m., with the best odds lining up with the afternoon sea breeze.
Afternoon Storms And Timing
According to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay, a roughly 40% chance of showers and storms will develop near the coast late this morning, then push inland through the afternoon for much of the metro. Hourly guidance points to the highest chances from late morning through midafternoon, so outdoor plans and the afternoon commute could run into quick-hitting downpours and some gusty winds.
Rainfall totals with most storms should stay between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, but any stronger cell could briefly dump higher amounts over a neighborhood or two.
Heat And Saharan Dust This Week
Later in the week, forecasters expect Saharan dust to drift over Florida, bringing drier air aloft that will knock down storm coverage and nudge daytime highs into the mid to upper 90s. The seven day forecast shows highs near 96°F by Wednesday and climbing into the upper 90s by Friday, so the real headline late week is the heat, not the rain.
Even with fewer afternoon showers, the humidity sticks around, which means heat index readings stay elevated right through the weekend.
Beat The Heat
With the heat index topping 100°F, Tampa has activated cooling stations this week, and residents are urged to check hours and locations before heading out. The city run centers typically operate from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to Bay News 9.
If you are spending time outside, bring plenty of water, try to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, and keep an eye on radar for pop up storms that can unleash brief heavy rain, lightning and a quick burst of wind.
