Saturday evening in Throggs Neck took a frightening turn when a 7-year-old boy was found unresponsive in a pool on private property, according to police. First responders pulled the child from the water and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where authorities say he is expected to survive.
Police say the incident unfolded around 5:44 p.m. at 658 Clarence Ave, where officers were told the boy had been discovered inside a pool on the property. FDNY and EMS units responded and transported him to Jacobi Medical Center. It was not immediately clear how he ended up unconscious, and as reported by News 12 New York, officials say the child is expected to pull through.
Where It Happened
The address listed in police reports, 658 Clarence Avenue, matches a long-standing private club parcel on Clarence Avenue that includes recreational amenities such as a swimming area. That points to the pool being on private property rather than part of a city facility. Public property records identify the site as The Strand / Manhem Club on Clarence Avenue, according to PropertyShark.
Pool Safety And Risks
Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury death for children, and even nonfatal incidents can cause serious long-term harm. Public health experts often stress that no single precaution is enough on its own, and that multiple layers of protection are key near any body of water.
The CDC reports that drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for kids ages 5 to 14. The agency recommends measures such as four-sided fencing that fully separates pools from homes and yards, life jackets for weaker swimmers, swim lessons, and CPR training for caregivers. Families and property owners with private pools are urged to maintain vigilant supervision and secure barriers around the water.
What Investigators Say
Police say the investigation is still active and they have not released additional details about what led to the boy's collapse. Officials and family members did not immediately offer further comment, and authorities have not announced any charges or specific safety actions related to the location, according to News 12 New York.
