A late-yesterday freight train derailment in Bucyrus sent hazmat crews racing to the scene, triggered a precautionary evacuation, and left at least one tank car tipped beside the tracks. Officials treated the wreck as a possible chemical incident, but as of early today, they had not reported any injuries.
The derailment happened around 8:40 p.m. near Whetstone Street and Auto Avenue, according to WHIO. The Bucyrus Police Department posted an alert urging residents within roughly one-third of a mile to evacuate while crews checked the train cars and possible leaks.
Bucyrus High School opened as an emergency shelter for people asked to leave their homes, and some early social media posts urged residents within about a mile of the site to clear out, Crawford County Now reported. Police also told neighbors to steer clear of the area and follow updates from official city channels.
By this morning, officials had narrowed the evacuation zone from roughly a mile to about a quarter mile as hazmat teams stabilized the scene, WOIO/FOX19 reported. That outlet added that authorities said there was no immediate threat after initial monitoring.
At least one tank car believed to be carrying hydrochloric acid was left leaning at an angle, and early video from FOX8 Cleveland showed emergency crews working around the derailed cars. Police warned about the risk of a leak and a possible explosion while responders worked to secure the damaged equipment.
How responders are handling the scene
Firefighters, police, specialized hazmat teams and railroad response crews have been on scene containing the area, monitoring the air and preparing to offload or transfer product from damaged cars if needed, officials said. Authorities asked residents to respect roadblocks and keep an eye on official city and police channels for clearance to return home, according to WHIO.
Why hydrochloric acid is a concern
Hydrochloric acid can release sharp, irritating vapors that burn the eyes, nose and throat and, at high concentrations, can damage the lungs and cause pulmonary edema. Federal toxicology guidance notes that responders use self-contained breathing apparatus and other protective gear when HCl is suspected, according to ATSDR.
The derailment also taps back into broader worries about hazardous-materials shipments rolling through small towns after the 2023 East Palestine crash and cleanup, which drew federal scrutiny and policy debates around rail safety, AP News reported. Residents and local leaders say even rare accidents can be disruptive and alarming for nearby neighborhoods.
Officials told people to follow city and police alerts, avoid the area around Whetstone Street and Auto Avenue, and use the high-school shelter if directed. We will update this story as officials release air-monitoring results and a re-entry timeline.
