Tukwila detectives say a 16-time convicted felon expecting a $5,000 payday instead wound up in handcuffs after an undercover sting that turned up more than $100,000 in stolen tools, equipment and vehicles. The man surrendered when a police K-9 team and SWAT officers moved in at a Tukwila commercial complex where he believed he would collect the cash. Detectives say they will seek several new felony charges. The suspect has not been publicly named while cases are prepared.

In a video posted to Facebook, the Tukwila Police Department says victims who went looking for missing tools traced items to homes in the 14900 blocks of 57th and 58th Avenue South, prompting detectives to launch an undercover investigation. Detectives linked the recovered items to commercial burglaries in Federal Way and Kent and set up an undercover meeting where the suspect arrived in a stolen pickup, according to the department. SWAT officers and a police K-9 assisted in the arrest, and most of the stolen property was returned to its owners that same night, the agency said.

How the sting unfolded

The department said incidents like this are exactly why its Special Enforcement Unit exists, allowing for long term problem solving through nontraditional law enforcement strategies. In a detailed recap, the Tukwila Police Department noted that detectives spent nearly 24 hours planning and carrying out the operation. Nights A patrol officers helped with transporting suspects and executing search warrants as the case unfolded.

One residence tied to the investigation is being condemned by code enforcement, according to the department. Police said that move is expected to cut down on ongoing trafficking of stolen property in that neighborhood.

Recovered haul and prior convictions

SEU detectives recovered more than $100,000 in stolen property, including trucks, trailers, tools and other equipment, and they seized a firearm that will be processed by evidence technicians and sent for ballistic testing, according to the Tukwila Police Department. The department said the suspect has 16 prior felony convictions, is currently under Department of Corrections supervision, and was arrested and sentenced to prison in 2021 for similar crimes. During that earlier case, officers located an AK-47, the agency noted.

Legal context

Under Washington law, people previously convicted of certain felonies can face a separate charge if they are found with a gun. Unlawful possession of a firearm can itself be a felony offense. See RCW 9.41.040 for details on prohibited possession and potential penalties.

What happens next

Tukwila detectives say they plan to file several new felony charges as investigators continue processing evidence and coordinating with prosecutors. Anyone with information related to these thefts is asked to contact the Tukwila Police Department.
