A Clark County grand jury has handed up an indictment against a Las Vegas man accused of killing his mother and critically injuring his sister in a southwest valley shooting last July. Prosecutors say 27-year-old Jacob Lister is now formally charged in connection with the July 27, 2025 attack that left 56-year-old Deborah Lister dead and Ashton Lister hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. He remains in the Clark County jail without bail as the case heads to district court.

Grand jury returns indictment

The indictment was returned Friday, according to 8 News Now. The outlet reports that the grand jury decision locks in allegations investigators have been building since the summer shooting and clears the way for prosecutors to pursue the case in Clark County District Court.

Shooting and arrest last July

Officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were called around 5:27 p.m. on July 27, 2025, to the 7800 block of West Ford Avenue, where they found two women with apparent gunshot wounds. One woman, later identified as Deborah Lister, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other, identified as Ashton Lister, was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, according to the department’s news release.

Detectives concluded that during an altercation inside the home, Jacob Lister shot his mother and sister, then remained in the area, the department said. He was arrested near the residence a short time later. Around the same time, officers also located a vehicle near Blue Diamond Road and Buffalo Drive as part of the response, according to KTNV.

Arrest report: 'paranoid ideations' and alleged abuse

Interview summaries released after Lister’s arrest indicate he told detectives he had “woken up remembering” incidents of sexual abuse and believed his phone was bugged, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The outlet reported that police described Lister as having “paranoid ideations,” including a belief that the government and police were setting him up. He also allegedly called a former co-worker for help immediately after the shootings.

What happens next

With the grand jury’s action, prosecutors are expected to bring the charges formally into Clark County District Court and set an arraignment date. Lister had previously made an initial appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on July 30, 2025, according to station reporting. 8 News Now reports that he continues to be held without bail while the case moves toward arraignment and pretrial hearings.

Police continue to seek tips

In a July 28, 2025 statement, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact its Homicide Section or Crime Stoppers. The release listed phone numbers and an email address for detectives and asked people with tips or video to come forward to assist investigators and, ultimately, prosecutors handling the case.
