On Saturday afternoon, a traffic stop on Otter Pond Road in Walton County turned from routine to high stakes when deputies said they found more than 300 grams of suspected methamphetamine hidden inside a locked toolbox on a pickup truck. The driver was arrested at the scene and transported to the county jail.
Deputies report they pulled over a white Chevy Silverado for an alleged injunction violation and deployed K‑9 Aries, who alerted to the odor of narcotics. Investigators said they then found suspected meth residue on the center console and turned their attention to a locked toolbox in the truck bed. Inside, they discovered a large plastic bag of white crystals that field‑tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed just over 300 grams, along with a revolver that had its serial number filed off and assorted drug paraphernalia, according to the Tampa Free Press. The driver, identified in that report as 43‑year‑old Wesley Thompson, was taken into custody on multiple felony counts.
K9 Aries Leads The Way
K‑9 Aries is the Walton County Sheriff's Office's dedicated narcotics dog and has been used in several prior traffic‑stop investigations that turned up illegal drugs. In one February case, a stop led to a fentanyl seizure and multiple arrests, as reported by WJHG. That track record helps explain why deputies routinely conduct open‑air sniffs during stops and why Aries' alert was enough for them to press on to the locked toolbox that, according to authorities, held the larger stash.
Legal Stakes
Under Florida law, possession of 14 grams or more of methamphetamine can trigger a trafficking charge, with penalties that climb quickly based on weight. The state's trafficking statute (Fla. Stat. §893.135) places possession of 200 grams or more of meth in a tier that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and substantial fines, a threshold the roughly 300‑gram seizure meets. Thompson also faces counts tied to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and for removing a firearm's serial number, which are charged under Florida's weapons laws (Fla. Stat. §790.23).
Local Enforcement Context
The seizure comes amid a string of recent narcotics operations in Walton County. In May, the sheriff’s office said a search warrant in Santa Rosa Beach uncovered a working meth lab and hundreds of grams of suspected meth, resulting in arrests and trafficking charges. Walton County's public news posts highlight an active vice and narcotics strategy around meth investigations in the area, according to a release from the Walton County Sheriff's Office.
The case remains active, and official charging documents and court dates will become part of the public record. Thompson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
