Human remains were found inside the furnace of a home on Detroit's west side yesterday, according to police, turning a routine workday into a crime-scene investigation.
An individual working on the house discovered the remains shortly after 11 a.m. in the 5200 block of S. Clarendon, authorities said. The Detroit Police Department has launched an investigation and is asking anyone with information to call 313-596-2260 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP.
As reported by WXYZ, DPD officials told reporters that the remains were found in the home's furnace and that investigators were notified after the worker made the discovery. The station noted that the department is treating the case as an active investigation while detectives work to learn more.
Other Recent Searches In The City
This discovery comes after several other high-profile searches in Metro Detroit this year that started when construction workers or neighbors reported possible human remains.
Local 4 reported in April that the FBI and Detroit police dug at a vacant lot after contractors said they had found what appeared to be human remains there. In a separate case in May, CBS Detroit reported that remains were located inside a home during a missing-persons search tied to a broader, citywide effort to find missing people.
What Investigators Do Next
When remains are recovered in Wayne County, they are typically referred to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office for forensic examination, autopsy, and toxicology testing, according to information posted on the county's Medical Examiner page.
The office's FAQs note that autopsies and follow-up laboratory work can take anywhere from days to months, depending on the tests required and the availability of dental, medical, or other identifying records. Those timelines affect how quickly investigators can determine both the identity of the deceased person and the cause of death.
How To Report Tips
Detroit police have reiterated that anyone who may have information connected to the case should call 313-596-2260 or contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP, WXYZ reported.
Officials have not released any additional details about the remains or whether any specific crime is suspected. Investigators said they plan to share more information as the probe moves forward.
