A quiet Sunday night in Fruitland Township turned deadly when a motorcyclist riding the wrong way on White Lake Drive slammed head-on into a car and was killed at the scene.

The crash happened on White Lake Drive between Durham Road and Cogswell Avenue in Muskegon County. Troopers say the motorcycle was headed west in the eastbound lane when it collided with an eastbound Nissan Altima, according to Michigan State Police. The crash report was logged at 11:03 p.m., and investigators remained on scene late into the night working to piece together exactly what went wrong.

As reported by MLive, the rider was a 35-year-old Twin Lake man, whose name has not yet been released. The Altima’s driver, an 18-year-old woman from Whitehall, was not injured.

Wrong-way crashes are disproportionately deadly

Wrong-way crashes do not happen every day, but when they do, they are often brutal. They typically involve high speeds and direct, head-on impacts that leave little room for error or survival.

The Federal Highway Administration reports that wrong-way driving was tied to more than 700 deaths in 2022 and notes that these collisions rank among the deadliest categories of roadway crashes, according to the FHWA.

Motorcyclists face outsized risk

Motorcycle riders are especially vulnerable in any crash, let alone a head-on impact. A recent analysis in Scientific Reports found that motorcyclists accounted for roughly 15% of all traffic deaths in 2022, far more than their share of registered vehicles on the road.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that helmet laws, rider training programs, and basic visibility measures, such as reflective gear and proper lighting, are key tools in reducing motorcycle fatalities, according to the CDC.

Michigan State Police investigators continue to probe the White Lake Drive crash and are asking anyone with information or relevant video to contact the Grand Rapids post. Emergency crews shut down the affected stretch of White Lake Drive while they cleared the wreckage and documented the scene, as reported by MLive.
