A 61-year-old unhoused man was found dead early Tuesday morning near a disused bus shelter in Victorville, and as of Wednesday, the person responsible remained unidentified. A pedestrian discovered the man unconscious on the ground in the 14600 block of Valley Center Drive, and deputies who responded began CPR before emergency medical personnel arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Victorville Sheriff's Station deputies were sent to handle what was initially reported as a medical aid call involving an unconscious adult male. Once on scene, deputies discovered the man had suffered traumatic injuries, and the county's Specialized Investigations Division Homicide Detail took over the case, which is being investigated as a violation of Penal Code 187 — murder. The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, though authorities have described him as a 61-year-old transient.
Timeline of the Discovery
Deputies were dispatched around 6:06 a.m. Tuesday after the pedestrian spotted the man near the bus stop, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Gloria Orejel, as reported by VVNG. The sheriff's department's own timeline places the start of the homicide investigation at about 6:09 a.m. Responding deputies confirmed the man was deceased before handing the scene over to homicide detectives, the outlet reported.
The site itself has drawn some confusion. Victor Valley Transit Authority Senior Marketing Manager Chris Ackerman contacted local media Tuesday to clarify that the location is an old, disused bus shelter rather than an active transit stop, per the same VVNG report. The 14600 block of Valley Center Drive sits in a commercial strip near a Costco Wholesale warehouse and directly across from the Valley Hi Kia dealership, an area with heavy commercial vehicle traffic and vacant structures, the outlet noted.
Investigators Seek Tips as Suspect Remains at Large
No suspect has been named, and the person responsible remains at large. The Homicide Detail is asking anyone with information related to the case to come forward. Tipsters can reach detectives S. Lenihan or Sergeant A. Bilbao through the department, or call the Homicide Detail directly at 909-890-4904. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call or text We-Tip at 844-909-3006; tips that lead to an arrest and conviction in San Bernardino County cases may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000, according to WeTip, which operates a 24/7 anonymous intake line without call tracing or caller ID.
The case is being tracked under DR# 172610847 and Homicide number H# 2026-083. Victorville contracts its police services through the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, a partnership dating back to 1962 that covers more than 74 square miles and roughly 142,000 residents, according to the City of Victorville. Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus oversees the department that is now leading the investigation.
What a Murder Charge Could Mean
Should a suspect eventually be arrested and charged, California law lays out steep consequences for a Penal Code 187 murder conviction. First-degree murder carries a state prison sentence of 25 years to life, while second-degree murder carries 15 years to life, according to the Law Offices of Randy Collins. Prosecutors would need to establish malice aforethought to secure a conviction under that statute.
A Death Amid Falling Homelessness Numbers
The killing comes as Victorville has reported significant declines in its unhoused population. The city's unsheltered homeless count dropped 68 percent over two years, falling to 104 individuals in 2026 from 141 in 2025 and 326 in 2024, according to the City of Victorville. Officials have credited outreach efforts and the transitional shelter provided by the Victorville Wellness Center, which opened in December 2023, for the decline. The city's overall homeless count, including sheltered residents, hit a six-year low of 441 people in 2026, down from 448 in 2025 and 611 in 2024 — though Victorville still ranks third countywide behind San Bernardino and Fontana.
Countywide, the trend has moved in a similar direction. San Bernardino County's 2026 Point-in-Time Count, conducted in January, recorded 3,718 total homeless individuals, a 3.1 percent decrease overall and a 7.1 percent drop in unsheltered homelessness compared to 2025, according to San Bernardino County officials, who attributed the improvement to expanded shelter capacity and permanent supportive housing investments. It remains unknown whether the victim in this case had used the Victorville Wellness Center or other local shelter resources before his death, and investigators have not said whether surveillance footage from nearby businesses like Costco or the Valley Hi Kia dealership captured any activity related to the killing.
Victorville has seen a string of violent incidents in recent years. Federal crime data for 2024 recorded 11 homicides in the city and an overall violent crime rate of roughly 1,015 incidents per 100,000 residents, according to OpenCrime. Anyone with information can also file a report through the sheriff's department's online reporting site or call its non-emergency line at 909-387-3700; the department's offices are located at 655 E 3rd St. in San Bernardino.
