Around 80 degrees and mostly cloudy early Saturday, Austin is starting the weekend in deceptively manageable fashion. By afternoon, the temperature is expected to reach 101 degrees, with the heat index climbing as high as 107, and the city is heading into a stretch of 102- to 103-degree days.
Saturday Heat Builds By Midafternoon
Clouds should thin through the morning, with mostly sunny skies by late morning and south winds of 5 to 10 mph. Gusts could reach 20 mph, while rain chances remain close to zero across Austin; the National Weather Service shows no rain in the immediate outlook.
Triple-Digit Heat Sticks Around
Saturday night should be mostly clear with a low near 77, but Sunday climbs to 102 under mostly sunny skies. Monday and Tuesday are also forecast to top out near 102, followed by highs around 103 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with overnight lows mostly in the upper 70s.
Plan Outdoor Time Early
With a Saturday heat index near 107 and little relief expected next week, outdoor chores and exercise will be safer in the morning or after sunset. Austin says its public libraries and parks facilities can serve as cooling centers during normal operating hours; residents should check the city's heat and cooling-center guidance before heading out, since hours and locations can change.
There are no watches, warnings or advisories in the current forecast, but the heat itself remains the main hazard. Drink water regularly, take breaks in air conditioning or shade, and never leave children, older adults or pets in a parked vehicle.
