A new El Super grocery store is opening near Craig Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard in North Las Vegas, bringing close to 120 jobs to the area when it debuts in September. The 32,000-square-foot store will be the fifth El Super location in the Las Vegas Valley, joining the chain's existing stores on East Lake Mead Boulevard, East Tropicana Avenue, West Sahara Avenue and South Lamb Boulevard.
As reported by KTNV, the store will anchor North Mesa Plaza at 1631 West Craig Road, a retail center that also includes a Walmart Supercenter, Ross Dress for Less, Old Navy, Skechers and Harbor Freight, according to NewMarket Advisors. The plaza sits at the southwest corner of Craig Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard. El Super's arrival lands in a city where 41.7% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, per U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts data, a demographic base that has long driven demand for the chain's format.
The new location will feature a produce section, a full bakery and a meat department, the same combination of carnicería, panadería and imported-goods offerings that has defined El Super since it opened its first store in South Gate, California, in 1997. El Super was built specifically to serve Latin American communities with low-price staples, and the banner now operates over 60 stores across five states under parent company Chedraui USA.
Growing Population Fuels Grocery Race
Rajaee Harris said the area's growing population makes new grocery options necessary, and that multiple nearby stores give shoppers more flexibility when searching for specific products, per KTNV's report. Harris added that shoppers are looking for bargains and that the new store will help them stretch their budgets amid rising costs.
North Las Vegas has become a hotbed for supermarket construction as chains race to keep pace with new housing. Smith's Marketplace opened near Tule Springs Parkway last month, and Hoodline previously reported that Smith's is building a $36 million supermarket in the area, a 122,000-square-foot store slated for 2027. Albertsons has also broken ground on a 62,000-square-foot store at Decatur Boulevard and Elkhorn Road, expected to open in early 2027.
Cardenas Opening Adds Competitive Pressure
Just weeks before El Super's announcement, competing grocer Cardenas Market completed its newest location at the HyLo Park shopping center at the beginning of this month, according to the same KTNV report. That 73-acre redevelopment along Lake Mead Boulevard and Rancho Drive is transforming a former casino site into a mixed-use residential and commercial hub, a project Hoodline has tracked as it turned from casino rubble into a new sports and shopping destination. The near-simultaneous openings put two specialty Hispanic grocery banners within a short distance of each other in North Las Vegas.
The expansion also arrives amid real financial strain for shoppers. Hoodline previously reported that Las Vegas households face some of the nation's priciest grocery bills due to high freight and distribution costs, a squeeze that has pushed more families toward discount supermarket chains. Harris's comments about shoppers hunting for bargains reflect that broader pressure on local household budgets.
Parent Company Faces Its Own Headwinds
El Super's growth in Nevada comes even as its parent company navigates turbulence elsewhere. Grupo Comercial Chedraui, the Mexican retail giant that owns Chedraui USA, reported in its second-quarter 2026 financial results that its U.S. division saw same-store sales decline by 2.3%, a drop executives attributed in part to stricter immigration enforcement reducing foot traffic in some markets, according to Investing.com. Chedraui USA operates 383 stores across California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas under the El Super, Fiesta Mart and Smart & Final banners.
The company has also drawn regulatory scrutiny in recent months. Hoodline reported in December that the EPA penalized Chedraui USA over unapproved disinfectants sold across El Super and Smart & Final locations in Nevada, California and Arizona, citing safety risks tied to unregistered cleaning products found during store inspections.
Despite those corporate pressures, the North Las Vegas opening signals continued investment in the market. With close to 120 jobs on the way and a September opening date, El Super is positioning its fifth valley store to serve a fast-growing community where grocery costs remain a persistent concern for many households.
