A deadly crash shut down all westbound lanes of State Road 16 near Windward Ranch Boulevard on Wednesday evening, killing at least one person and forcing troopers to route traffic away from one of St. Johns County's busiest corridors during rush hour. Florida Highway Patrol was alerted to the wreck around 5:30 p.m. near the entrance to the Windward Ranch subdivision, south of World Golf Village.
As of the update, officials had not released details about what happened or how many people were involved, according to First Coast News. St. Johns County Fire Rescue reported that no transports were made from the scene, and Florida Highway Patrol troopers remained on site investigating the crash into the evening. All westbound lanes of the highway were closed as of the update, with authorities urging drivers to seek alternate routes.
A Corridor With a Troubling Pattern
Wednesday's crash is the latest in a string of deadly wrecks on State Road 16 this summer. Just a month earlier, a fatal crash at Stratton Boulevard killed a 68-year-old woman and hospitalized a St. Johns County Sheriff's deputy, prompting nearby residents to demand faster installation of long-planned traffic signals at that intersection, as reported by News4JAX. Ten days before that, on July 9, a 64-year-old woman riding a motorized scooter was killed when a speeding Tesla struck her and then overturned into a hotel parking lot, shutting down multiple intersections for hours, as Hoodline previously reported.
Windward Ranch itself, the neighborhood bordering Wednesday's crash site, is a 431-acre, 580-home gated community developed by Lennar Homes on the southwest side of State Road 16, according to county planning records. The subdivision's residents access the highway directly via Windward Ranch Boulevard, one of many un-signalized subdivision entrances that have multiplied along the corridor as new development has added thousands of daily vehicle trips to what was once a rural two-lane road.
Fatal Crash Investigations Take Time
Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigation policy requires certified officers to conduct detailed physical scene mapping and reconstruction after fatal crashes, a process that routinely mandates multi-hour highway closures while investigators document vehicle speed, roadway markings, and physical debris before reopening lanes, per agency policy. That procedure helps explain why westbound State Road 16 remained shut down well after the crash was first reported, even as the identities of those involved and the cause of the wreck stayed unknown.
The corridor's growing danger reflects broader countywide trends. St. Johns County recorded 7,443 total motor vehicle crashes in 2023, resulting in 38 fatalities and 131 serious injuries, according to data compiled by Signal Four Analytics for FDOT District Two. Annual crashes in the county climbed steadily from 6,709 in 2019 as the local population expanded, the same data shows.
Widening Project Underway, But Not Finished
State Road 16's traffic troubles are not news to county planners. A Florida Department of Transportation study published in 2025 found that the 5.9-mile stretch from International Golf Parkway to I-95 already operates at a Level of Service D to E, carrying up to 46,100 vehicles daily, and is projected to degrade to a failing Level of Service F by 2050 without widening, according to an ArcGIS StoryMap compiling the findings.
In response, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners approved $25 million for State Road 16 improvements in June 2025, with $21.46 million earmarked to widen the highway to four lanes between International Golf Parkway and County Road 2209, and another $4.34 million set aside for new traffic signals and medians at Stratton Boulevard and Industry Center Road, Florida Politics reported. As of July, county public works officials said the widening work near International Golf Parkway had reached 60% completion, with temporary signalization and an eastbound traffic shift scheduled to follow Labor Day. The project is one of 44 active roadway efforts underway across St. Johns County this fiscal year, backed by a combined $183.1 million budget, according to News4JAX.
Until those upgrades reach completion, State Road 16 remains a construction zone layered atop a corridor already straining under suburban growth. Whether speed, impairment, or another factor contributed to Wednesday's crash near Windward Ranch remains unknown, and Florida Highway Patrol has not said whether charges will follow once its traffic homicide investigation concludes.
