Raleigh is starting Monday under mostly clear skies and about 77°F, but the pleasant early-hour setup will not last. Temperatures are expected to surge to 98°F, with heat-index values as high as 109°F, as a Heat Advisory takes effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Heat Peaks Monday Afternoon
West winds of 3 to 9 mph will accompany mostly sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory covers Raleigh and much of central North Carolina, where prolonged time outdoors could raise the risk of heat illness.
Temperatures will climb through the 80s by late morning and reach the mid- to upper 90s during the afternoon. Residents should drink plenty of fluids, use air conditioning or shade when possible, and check on older neighbors and anyone without reliable cooling.
Storms Could Arrive Late
Isolated showers and thunderstorms may develop late Monday afternoon and evening, with the strongest activity more likely north and west of Raleigh. Forecasters say damaging winds would be the primary concern if stronger storms form, while Raleigh has a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight, mainly between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.
Tonight will remain warm and muggy, with mostly cloudy skies and a low near 76°F. The heat index could still reach 101°F during the evening, so temperatures will not offer much relief immediately after sunset.
Hot Through Thursday Before Rain Chances Rise
Tuesday and Wednesday will stay mostly sunny, with highs near 94°F both days. Thursday could reach 97°F, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m.
More noticeable relief arrives Friday, when the high should reach about 91°F and the chance of showers and thunderstorms rises to 70%. Saturday and Sunday look cooler, with highs near 87°F, but showers and thunderstorms are likely Saturday and a chance of storms remains Sunday.
