Las Vegas is waking up to a clear but already hot Sunday, and the thermometer has nowhere good to go: The valley is headed for 110 degrees under an Extreme Heat Warning that runs through 8 p.m.
The latest conditions were clear and around 84 degrees before sunrise, with very dry air and west-northwest winds near 21 mph. The National Weather Service expects sunny skies and only a 1% chance of rain across the valley.
Afternoon Heat And Wind Arrive Together
Temperatures will climb past 100 degrees by late morning before peaking near 110 in the afternoon. South-southwest winds will increase to between 2 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph, making outdoor conditions even more punishing.
The heat warning covers the Las Vegas Valley and remains in effect through Sunday evening. The NWS warning advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours and check on people who may lack reliable cooling.
Little Overnight Relief In Sight
Sunday night will stay mostly clear, but the low will only fall to about 86 degrees, with temperatures potentially rising again overnight. Monday brings a modest dip to 107 degrees, followed by another 107-degree high Tuesday.
Those overnight temperatures will keep homes, pavement and buildings warm well after sunset. Children and pets should never be left in unattended vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
Another Heat Surge Arrives Midweek
The forecast turns hotter again Wednesday, with highs near 109 degrees continuing through Friday and a return to 110 degrees Saturday. Isolated afternoon storms remain possible over higher terrain in the southern Great Basin and northwestern Arizona, but rain chances in Las Vegas stay near zero through the week.
Anyone who develops confusion, fainting, severe weakness or hot, dry skin should be moved to a cool place and treated as a medical emergency. The weather service says to call 911 for suspected heat stroke.
