A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting that shut down both directions of Broadway Boulevard at Colonel Drive in Garland shortly before 6:50 a.m. today. Police say no officers were hurt in the incident, which triggered a full closure of the intersection as investigators worked the scene.
The Garland Police Department confirmed the shooting in a Facebook post this morning, stating that a subject involved in the shooting was deceased and that a public information officer had been dispatched to the scene at Broadway Boulevard and Colonel Drive. As reported by FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth, police have not yet disclosed what initiated the response or why officers discharged their weapons. Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Broadway Boulevard at Colonel Drive remained closed as the investigation continued.
A Corner With a Troubled History
This is not the first time officers have fired their weapons at this exact intersection. Just over a year earlier, on July 27, 2025, Garland police investigated another officer-involved shooting at the same corner of Broadway Boulevard and Colonel Drive, according to CBS Texas. That earlier incident happened around 1:45 a.m. and ended with the suspect uninjured and taken for a mental health evaluation — a markedly different outcome than Monday's fatal encounter.
The intersection also sits close to South Garland High School and Handley Elementary School, with municipal records noting the high school is positioned catty-corner across Colonel Drive from the commercial properties along Broadway. That proximity adds another layer of sensitivity to a stretch of roadway that has now seen two separate police shootings in roughly 14 months.
What Happens Next in the Investigation
As is standard for the department, the officers involved in Monday's shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave while internal and criminal reviews remain pending, per WFAA. Garland Police Department procedures call for officer-involved shootings to undergo internal investigation by department detectives working alongside the Professional Standards Unit, which handles internal affairs and use-of-force compliance.
Department policy authorizes officers to use deadly force when reasonably necessary to protect themselves or others from an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury, or to prevent the escape of a violent felon, standards that must also comply with Texas criminal statute and constitutional requirements. It remains unknown whether Garland police will ask the Texas Rangers Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety to conduct an independent review, an option state agencies make available when local departments or district attorneys request it.

Monday's shooting adds to a string of violent incidents along the Broadway corridor in recent months. In August, Garland police investigated a fatal shooting near Centerville Road on the same arterial roadway that resulted in first-degree felony murder charges against a 17-year-old, with the victim identified as a 17-year-old Wylie resident.
Citywide, Garland recorded 7,625 total threat and crime incidents in 2025, with violent crime making up 11.7 percent, or 891 incidents, and property crime accounting for 75.4 percent, or 5,747 incidents, according to Base Operations data that classifies Garland as a Tier 2 low-risk city relative to larger metro hubs. The department employs more than 350 sworn officers and roughly 120 civilian staff serving a population exceeding 230,000 residents, making it one of the larger municipal forces in Dallas County.
