A Jewish man from Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood was stabbed from behind near Fifth Avenue and West 47th Street in Manhattan on Wednesday evening, in an attack now being investigated as a possible antisemitic hate crime. The victim was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital in stable condition, while the woman suspected of attacking him fled on foot and remained at large.
According to Israel National News, the attack occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 47th Street, in the heart of Manhattan's Diamond District. A woman believed to be in her 30s allegedly approached the victim from behind, stabbed him, and then escaped west toward Sixth Avenue. Preliminary emergency communications cited by CrownHeights.info placed the stabbing at approximately 15 W. 47th Street.
Hatzalah volunteers treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition, the outlet's report noted. The circumstances that led up to the attack were not immediately available, and police had not released the victim's identity.
Suspect Description and Search Underway
The suspect was described as a white woman, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, wearing blue jeans and white sneakers with a dark sweater tied around her waist, per the same account. Manhattan Shomrim said it was working alongside the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force to investigate the stabbing. Whether the NYPD had made any arrests was not immediately available, and there was no immediate confirmation of an arrest as of Wednesday night.
CrownHeights.info, which first reported the attack within the Crown Heights community, said it would provide updates as more information becomes available. The outlet's initial report came from byline coverage filed under its crime and Crown Heights news sections hours after the stabbing occurred.
Part of a Rising Pattern of Antisemitic Attacks
The Wednesday stabbing adds to a string of attacks on Jewish New Yorkers that city data shows has been accelerating this year. NYPD statistics show Jewish New Yorkers were the victims of 245 of the 463 confirmed hate crimes recorded during the first nine months of 2026, roughly 53 percent of the total, up from 242 during the same period in 2025, according to the same report from Israel National News.
Separate reporting from CNN found antisemitic hate crimes in New York City up 8% so far this year, making up more than half — 53.9% — of all reported incidents citywide. Overall hate crimes in the city rose just over 15%, with 425 incidents recorded this year compared with 367 the year before, even as the NYPD reported broader drops in violence, including a 24.1% decline in murders and a 9.6% decline in shooting incidents.
Other Recent Attacks on Jewish New Yorkers
The Diamond District stabbing follows several other recent attacks targeting Jewish residents around the city. In July, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg announced the indictment of Raul Morales, 51, for allegedly stabbing two men — a 57-year-old man near West 83rd Street and Central Park West and a 50-year-old Jewish man with a screwdriver near West 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue — in what prosecutors called an antisemitic attack on the Upper West Side, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Morales was charged with multiple counts of attempted murder in the second degree as a hate crime; the office noted he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Police identified and took Morales into custody that same afternoon, as reported by NBC News.
More recently, a 14-year-old Jewish boy was stabbed in the hand during an altercation inside a Borough Park synagogue in September, with a 22-year-old suspect taken into custody, Israel National News reported. That same month, a 48-year-old man was arrested and charged with a hate crime after allegedly pursuing a 24-year-old Jewish man in Brooklyn with a knife while shouting Nazi slogans. In August, a 46-year-old man was arrested after authorities said he disrupted Shabbat services at a Manhattan synagogue, made antisemitic remarks, attacked a woman, and hurled a racial slur at a security guard, per CNN's report.
No further details about the Wednesday attack, including the victim's identity or any arrest, had been confirmed as of this writing. CrownHeights.info said it would continue to post updates as the investigation develops.
