I was roaming the streets of Flushing, New York City when I suddenly heard a loud drumming sound coming from down the block. I followed the noise and it led me to a small crowd of people who were all gathered together for a traditional dragon dance.
In the east, dragons are actually considered to be symbolic of good luck and wisdom. As such, the dances are usually performed during the Lunar New Year in order to scare away evil spirits. As part of the performance, a team of dancers will use poles to manipulate and move the dragon.
If you visit Flushing now, you’ll most likely come across a few live performances and loads of festive Chinese New Year decorations.
