Designed for the 1964 World’s Fair, the Observation Towers – known for their “flying saucer-like" appearance – are iconic structures in New York City history. Decades ago, visitors could get an amazing view of the city by heading to the top of the towers via glass “Sky Streak” elevators. Today, that kind of view is rare to come by. After all, the site has been abandoned for a while now.
Every time I pass by, I wonder what it must have been like to stand in the Observation Towers. I’ve only ever seen them from the bottom and from a distance.
Yesterday, however, I had my first close look at the towers, thanks to a new camera lens kit that I purchased. With it, I am able to zoom really close up to whatever subject I am shooting. I used it as sort of a telescope to see parts of the Observation Towers I was never able to see before. It was truly an amazing sight:
I’ve only read about the fair, but seeing the towers up close acually allowed me to visualize the occasion. It must have been an incredibly exciting time and I could only imagine what the view from atop those towers must have looked like over fifty years ago.
